I'm going back to basics with my long stagnant drawing skills in the hopes of realizing my teenage dream to become a comic books penciller. Mina was very pretty but her prettiness had a sort of frail quality that my sketch doesn't have. Regardless, I do like the sketch. It's one of my ten minute specials and I've come to realize that my best work happens when I'm quick, decisive and use strong strokes. I think the sketch reflects that.Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-52280487452094736712007-07-02T08:17:00.000-07:002007-07-02T08:26:08.794-07:00Wow. My last post was May 8th. I'm quite embarrassed about that. May and June have been a bit of a trainwreck in all sorts of ways but that's no excuse. At least I have a couple of sketches to post.

I had lost the source of picture for sketching some of the people who will be in the graphic novel but yesterday it popped up in a place a least expected and I did a little sketching today.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiclnEobpciUTpKPMuEi5vIkrQJgY8_j0ghkbJcPpjdtPApfYcGyXz_PXAHwsP-5OWWLbbwx_Vrps0PFQuy5GIDB67aPe6HIXw1ornWU2e0mTMAgOyqWW6VT9Y4lNmeAOPeukEbHg/s320/mina.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5082620591591877154" />

Just a couple of sketches of Mina here. I used to look at other people's sketchbooks and wonder why they had little notes of very obvious details on their sketches. I think I know now because I put my little notes there to hammer into my head what I had to remember about her clothes.Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-21498182612025298542007-05-08T15:06:00.000-07:002007-05-08T15:35:07.915-07:00Oh! And I'm Doing a Graphic Novel!I've been busting with this news for awhile but kept forgetting to ask the other person involved if he minded if I post about it. See, this other person asked if I'd like to work with him on a couple of projects. Draw the graphic novels he wrote.

Whoo hoo!!!!

I wore a smile for about a week straight after he asked me. It's one thing to know you can do something but it's a whole 'nother matter to have someone else believe you can do it. And to have that someone else be someone who knows his stuff, knows comics, how to write and be someone you've respected for awhile...In the words of Widget (you geeks know who I mean), "Oh gosh, oh golly, oh wow!" It's like I poured the concrete last summer when I started this blog but this offer finally set it. Now I can walk on it, now I've got a foundation to really start building on.

And boy, I've got to start building. This is going to present challenges I've really avoided up until now. Places where I've put aside practice, like landscapes and paneling, in preference to easier stuff. Frankly, as excited as I was when I was asked, I was equally as scared. I almost had the sense that my bluff was being called. I was being dared to do what I kept yammering on about. I have some skills but they're far from a complete set. So can I do it? Guess we'll see.

Anyhow, Thank you for asking me partner. I'm thrilled that I'm working with you.Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-90002221472823917212007-05-08T14:57:00.000-07:002007-05-08T15:06:35.390-07:00Really Ruff Sketch.Forgive the pun in the title but it really is apropriate. I'm alone in my house today as my husband took the kids and ran away for the day so it was the perfect time for some real sketching. I've been doodling all day trying to sketch out a few scenes for Aleaxndria Jones and decided to take a break and work on Rammy, her dog. I think I have him. I hope I have him.

Here's the sketch;
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9kOtAazSAWaNP4V_wINmzfAV4eCHVOWNi0T90NNGDxeVllenVF4Bxau0ZYmdtEW_QHrq3pVhvPFELgEp5pslJUXKXh7RBEGdQ3LAXXIQR7yAfyWee6FVRGeU6mnoRtxz3JyFkPg/s320/rammy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5062313246285128594" />

Now it is really rough and probably not fit for viewing but it's the first one I've done that seemed to have some personality and life and I thought I'd put it up. I'm not sure how much End Rammy will look like Beginning Rammy but it will likely be pretty darn close. I'm not one to change much after I've got a doodle that feels right. Now, I just have to see what Denise says...And give the poor dog a body of course.Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-19417690270233679132007-05-02T10:49:00.000-07:002007-05-02T11:25:46.929-07:00Alexandria JonesOver at Let's Play Math, Denise has begun publishing a series of adventures she wrote about a girl named Alexandria Jones. I joked that I'd love to do some pictures for Denise and she took me up on the offer. I'm shooting for 3 or 4 different scenes Denise can use.

I realized that I have a rather snobby frame of mind when it comes to drawing comic book characters as opposed to those who have a more cartoony, animation-style look. The latter was what I wanted for Alexandria. Bigger eyes, simpler features and less detail...The kinds of stuff that really appealed to me when I was younger. And I thought that would somehow be easier then a comic book style or drawing from real life. Ha!

I had a really tough time working on the proportions of a child's body and the shape of a child's face. I had a horrible time coming up with something distinctive. I somehow thought a cartoonier style didn't need to reference real images and hours passed before I finally picked up a National Geographic, found a child's face I thought would work and got the right shape for the face. Lesson learned.

Finally I had a half-decent sketch. Of course when Denise saw it she immediately saw a fault I hadn't. The glasses can look like bags under Alexandria's eyes.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoFMrvVsqFa2zH8ot7roA_VqXNnYDmNgW2pbuMl9eU-mfSLgGKOqiZJIoUnlMgTMNaWqm1hmvh77NUEtyo6heJXX8vWxlVFQri54lYOjsJY_LGDKNMY8zguc55cDxoXRJh8RP7aA/s320/alexandria.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5060025811127788354" />

It seems that sometimes the more you work on an image, the less you see of the faults. It's a blessing to have fresh eyes look it over so the obvious can be pointed out to me.

After that I took the sketch over to Drawingboard.org. I wasn't quite sure how to handle the glasses. There, Brianl took it and did a quick reworking. He fixed the glasses (changed the style as well) and suggested some finishing stuff I hadn't bothered with yet. I love the people at drawingboard.org.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR69ZowRM_GR58ybA_31OkJsjk_CE5wqKWcRSAzPG8Pk8C_1qRx-Up22RrRal59smhhSl51QYfdMtajvpWpXoosQIaHx_yeO_3Niz5HPKDHc03jUgr2L0eR3f02QC5Q9AdPJpApA/s320/alexandria_paintOver.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5060026957884056402" />

The glasses could still go but they are a sort of universal symbol for a healthy intellect which is a quality of the character's. That and my daughter was thrilled to see that the character had glasses. She has to wear them and she's commented before on how so few TV and book characters seem to have them.

So now I think I'll work on some figure sketches and start planning out a few scenes. I also have to work on Rammy, Alexandria's dog.Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-22718667675537848382007-04-28T03:38:00.000-07:002007-04-28T09:13:26.775-07:00Some Girls with Clothes for a ChangeI picked up some National Geographics last night and started drawing. I'll post the results over the next few days.

These pictures were from a story on the Ukraine done in the eighties. The first is a girl herding a cow with a stick. I didn't bother with the cow. I'd like to ink this one or see someone with skill ink it so I could learn a bit about inking.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiif0eEyPQE2ltG3XYl2suz8KxXMZozVAVjCET7UKueJReAQSp7E7cuspbOawvh0-gHmW18Lmeag-U5fUDbNaZv5O7cW7b8cDDFTENvmpgFI_QcZr3ZswAmttifigDITqWaOVG8ag/s320/girl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5058428147718185698" />

Next is a ballerina. It's a good example of what happens when you don't have your paper at the right angle. This was my kind of jam as good looking characters are nice to look at but you can get a look more character into an 'ugly' face. Ugly is the wrong word though. None of these pictures are of pretty women but some of them are certainly attractive in a way. I really like the big woman with the mullet and could look at her for quite a while and The girl with the long nose looks like she has a bit of a sad story to tell.

Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-90053846023693228832007-04-14T17:50:00.000-07:002007-04-14T17:55:18.856-07:00My Most Viewed Drawing...
...According to hits I get from Google Image searches anyway. We've been a little busy at home with some family issues and some changes to our homeschooling and drawing kept getting lost in the shuffle. But now I have the prospect of a project to work on. A real, honest-to-goodness project! I'm over-the-moon excited and extremely grateful to the person who gave me the opportunity and my fingers are just itching for pencils and paper again.
So...More boobs. But all they ever seem to post over on drawingboard.org are nude females.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW7ErjZGEGp58Ae5bvzIElOAhpxahRblvmQYe9adrPq_vFUwb5iJbJJbnjC8uWxRjOU3YO_Ao8b8AuX1EBc8sB-rMqIpLk6hakupDguneFtQKOYllwt-n0K3McSKK_6yziAic-WA/s320/Nekkidlady.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5053448429696686626" />Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-23399978034688965852007-02-06T05:53:00.000-08:002007-02-06T06:22:22.823-08:00FrustratedI have to say, holding on to a goal is tough. I've never really bothered with that before as I'm more of a floater then a committer when it comes to things I want to accomplish. I tend to simply shift goals rather then stick to them.

I decided I wanted to be a penciler this summer. For the longest time it seemed inevitable. I knew that I was absolutely going to be one. Then my drive slowed down. Christmas was coming and there are lots of little joys involved in that like baking and telling stories while snuggling with the kids that can push bigger thoughts out of a person's mind. A thought of being a comic book artist sometime in the future really loses it's immediate grip when you're feeling fullfilled by the accomplishment of baking a damn good gingerbread (damn good!).

So coming out of christmas I was in danger of shifting goals again. I really like being a housewife after all, isn't that enough for me? And then, in January my husband I decided to shift focus in our homeschooling. Up until now we've been radical unschoolers meaning no lessons and simply taking learning for granted as a part of life. Our basic philosophy on learning hasn't changed but we've picked up a math curricullum for our 8 year old and I'm getting into planning some more focused studies. So again, drawing is put aside as I search for activities and downloads on ancient Greece for my 8 year old (She loved the Illiad, such a sucker for gore, and today we're making tunics, pelos and himations (ancient greek garments) for her Barbies). It's exciting and fun stuff. But it has it's dangers.

It's a problem of immediate pleasure and joy trumping the longer term goals. It's a matter of trying to find the balance between enjoying what I'm doing right now and putting work into goals for the future. Putting aside the plans for the mini trebuchet (middle ages next month!) and picking up the pencil and paper.

That damn discipline thing now that the sense of being destined to be a penciler has faded a little.

I'm not sure how much sense that made but I thought I'd write it down anyway as it's been frustrating me for awhile.

Anyhow, here's a sketch I did after a Frank Franzetta picture. No comparison of course but good lord, that man loves his booty.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8J3ynMt213oXhVtQXLBG5bozAZEuqqS1kSzqfBLbY7eB8gsw44o9JGUr17tnjRxDPysQtIMv6NHEvPDiws4t-5NhOE7RyX71vu4-PRUZ7SmALL_fxvNmfwwNSggwF3MOGwGv_Tw/s320/franfake.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5028425421924024018" />Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-80341535432259550632007-01-23T10:43:00.000-08:002007-01-23T10:49:34.971-08:00Finally back.Apologies for the long break. I have done no drawing for the past couple of months as it was filled with baking, family time and cleaning. December anyway. January has been more a matter of lazing around after the christmas rush. Anyhow, I though I'd post a couple of naked ladies I did for Drawingboard.org's drawing jam.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKXo7tE3WQbxZQfiDbkaeu87MQsZnNnCHxflxeO2nW19DtFr_Mp_AWEiieUMN92T2851Zai9l1ZZlnPlPsTuGWYUZ8ASkzxHIGV51Z_MsmLNdOMMIkCMKmspfpxwc0JdetD9eFTA/s320/janjam1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5023299323361292082" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0n2AUN2RzV3RYYSe8k5r9mIvRXTrWSR04q68fTg1GJvnrgLfRUSBmT5wAHwvpZdybfvsx3iL_VxCQhL_qjaLO6DRrlG-PQK2kZY6gkufSVLb8_hAA3hi4NUo7suFJkF2zjjdIpw/s320/janjam2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5023299843052334930" />Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-54768023558704763732006-12-11T15:55:00.000-08:002006-12-11T15:56:05.466-08:00test post.Let's seeDawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-69475285093188793322006-12-11T07:20:00.000-08:002006-12-11T07:21:41.197-08:00post test.Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-37225081591132263122006-11-22T03:52:00.000-08:002006-11-22T04:06:57.319-08:00The dogA couple of sketches of our dog Kia. She's a mutt though from her colouring we know she has rottweiler in her somewhere and her excitible personality, penchant for sniffing and head shape also have us thinking she's got beagle in her. Maybe basset hound too as her legs are too short for her body. Then there's her tail. It looks like it's not attached right, a last minute addition someone rammed into her backend.

But she is a lovely, loving, wonderful dog.

The full body sketch looks okay in the front end but the backend doesn't work.

Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-67448940222098376882006-11-20T11:33:00.000-08:002006-11-20T11:42:27.997-08:00More sketchesThese are more little face sketches I did the night I did the ones in the last post. The blonde with the curves actually looked like something out of Mad Magazine (I can't remember what artist and yes, I used to be an avid Mad magazine reader) until I overworked her. In two pencil strokes she went from something really cool that evoked Mad art to just another blonde. Sigh.

I like the last one myself.

Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-74989019572895972622006-11-18T06:02:00.000-08:002006-11-18T06:24:42.365-08:00Okay, I'm back.And I'm back because I noticed this morning that my little Lexmark icon on my toolbar had a red 'x' on it. I ran my mouse over it and beside the 'exit' choice, in brackets was, 'disables scan & copy buttons...'

Um. Could I have clicked exit on the Lexmark icon? I've restarted the computer since then, so what if I tried one more time...?

I plugged in the printer, tried a scan and voila...It works.

I just cannot communicate how completely stupid I feel at the moment. I mean, it's a complete and utter feeling of absolute stupidity. Feel free to laugh at me.

Oh boy. So the blog will probably still be slow until after christmas but then whenever I say something like that, declare my intentions, I generally turn around and do the opposite so who knows?

Anyhow, a few sketches that I liked. The first one was done a week ago but sort of captured that moment of exposed dumbassery when I realized my all-in-one was most likely fine. I call that sketch, "D'oh!"

Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-76967108613970971612006-11-17T18:35:00.000-08:002006-11-17T18:40:11.157-08:00HiatusThis is miserable. My other scanners (I had two old ones) would probably work if I could find the damn power cords and cables. But who knows where they are? So I'm left buying a new all-in-one...After Christmas.

To be fair to the family though, I'm supposed to be baking and decorating right now so if my scanner had to go, now was probably a good time. So let me take a break until Christmas is over and done with and I have a shiny new Lexmark cheap-piece-of-crap to scan my drawings on. I'll stick any work I do away for the new year and there will be a whole pile of good stuff waiting to be viewed.Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-5341792662805486742006-11-14T12:11:00.000-08:002006-11-14T12:18:28.201-08:00Scanner deadDarn it. I went to scan some sketches today and when I pressed the little button my machine did nothing. I'm suspicious because it looks like little hands were playing with the paper feed function (which doesn't work now either. The whole machine is snottily unresponsive).

However, it's a $50 all-in-one printer we bought last January because it was cheaper then buying cartridges for our last printer so I think we got our money out of it. Now it's probably either go buy another cheap one or fire up the ten year old scanner I've got tucked away in the basement. We'll see.Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-12375247228460778722006-11-07T07:40:00.000-08:002006-11-07T08:11:49.278-08:00Drawing box pictures!I have to apologize for how long it's been between posts. Starting with Halloween we moms enter our busy season. I'm not optimistic about frequent posts between now and Christmas either. As a canuck mom I don't have to worry about Thanksgiving (that was back in the beginning of October for us) but I'm a big believer in celebrating Christmas as a season so I'm already starting the baking, planning, christmas cards, etc. Busy stuff. So apologies if my posts thin out for a couple of months.

I do however have the completed drawing box that my dad built for me (my contribution was passing him the wood glue or nodding knowingly at key moments) so I can post a picture.

It's a rough plywood box (Mom and Dad are renovating so free building supplies! Whoo hoo!). The top, where I draw, has a thin piece of pressboard on it for a smooth drawing surface and a lip at the bottom to hold pencils and paper. The top is a bit bigger then the box and measures 19 inches by 24 inches and is attached to the box by a piano hinge. The piece that holds up the drawing surface is neat. I had visions of a couple of sticks, one at each corner to hold the surface up but dad cut a support that's hinged to the bottom of that surface and he or mom glued some velcro on to hold the hinge when it's folded flat and not in use. He regretted not putting a latch or handle on it and thought we should have used a much better grade of plywood but heck, I'm thrilled. The drawing surface is fantastic to work on and the angle is perfect. And the making of it made for a great memory with my dad.

I love it.

Unfortunately, the kids love it too. It's been used for drawing and a jigsaw puzzle surface almost nonstop since my mom dropped it off yesterday. Here's a picture...

The back's of the heads are, from left to right, my neice Maddie, my son Harry and my daughter Catherine.Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32861495.post-78757327493463033292006-10-20T09:49:00.000-07:002006-10-20T09:59:02.359-07:00About all the non-comic book stuff...I know most of my recent posts have not been comic book related but I was looking at sample comic book scripts a couple of weeks ago and realized that MOST of what a penciller is required to do is not superheroes. It's planes, cars, buildings, scenery, spaceships, robots, animals and ordinary people. So I'm lightening up on the superhero sketches for awhile to focus on other subjects and I think I will be inking after all, not because I want to do it in the future but more because it makes me really work on finishing pieces (the discipline thing). Not that there won't be superhero pictures too, but they'll be a lot more stuff that seems unrelated.Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05895897568006441289noreply@blogger.com0
